About this collection

Welcome to Egyptian Gardens! This site was created, and is maintained by the Rare Books and Special Collections Library at the American University in Cairo. Drawing on the Library's rich collections, the site aims to document the history of gardening in Egypt. It focuses on the period between 1870 and 1900, when large and representative gardens were established in Cairo and its environs. Today only a few traces remain of these ambitions projects survive in Cairo. This site pays hommage to the expert gardeners and botanists who not only beautified the Egyptian capital, but wre also instrumental in importing many of the species that are still widely grown in Egypt today.
