About this collection

The Sphinx: English Illustrated Weekly was a weekly English-language magazine, first published in Cairo in 1892 that ran until 1947. The magazine targeted English expatriates, tourists, and Anglophone Egyptian elites. It was only published during the high tourist season (generally November to April) and articles focused on society gossip, various aspects of Egyptian history and society, and travel.

The digital collection currently only has issues from 1905 to the 1920s, though we endeavor to add more from the Rare Books and Special Collections Library's run.
