S.U. starts food crusade Students irked by bad cafeteria control A food competition started last Tuesday between the Student Union and the cafeteria food services. ♦Student Union va Food Services* was the first statement on pamphlets circled around campus last Tuesday by the Student Union ur- ging students to buy the Union’s cheaper, better quality and quantity food. The food competition was triggered by the student’s increasing complaints of prices, fo^ quality and quantity. To go with this, we also need a new name-plate design (CARAVAN), We invite all those interested, to send la their designs to the CARAVAN office. The deadline for submitting your designs will be on April 1,1976. Results of this competition will appear on our April 5 issue, which will also display the winning design as Its new name-plate. The new name-plate designer will receive L.E. 5. the cafeteria food service’s director said that a boycott organised last year resulted in the formation of a Food Service Committee. This committee, after long discussions agreed to lower food prices, and things went allright for a year with the new prices. «I also heard that students want the university to subsidize the food prices, meaning they aren’t demanding anything from the cafeteria management itself. For this reason, I don’t see any necessity for competi- tion with the cafeteria, instead they should negotiate with the university administration.* He continued to say that everybody knows the high cost of food on the market. ♦For instance, one kilo of oranges costs five piasters, and it consists of about six oranges*, he quoted, «and one glass of orange juice takes from three and a half to four oranges.* Mr. Al-Khishin said that the Student Union’s food competition has nc obvious effects — until now — on the cafeteria food sales. He concluded that the cafeteria management has no objections to what students organise. Ahmed Ayoub, the Student Union President said in reply to Mr. Al-Khishin that the tteion is not asking the university to pay any subsidy on meals offered at present. ♦What we are trying to prove is that the cafeteria management is inefficient*, he said, «and this is by showing that we. the students, who are not (Cont. oa page 8) The Aimerican University in Cairo Newspaper Volume 56 No. 18 Monday 22, March Two Piastres K.P. students oppose evaluation board Around 85 English Program students gathered last Saturday in the main campus cafeteria, raising their compla hits oa the program to Nazlh Nujaim, the freshman represeat-ative in the High Board. Tomo rrow's assembly will be compi etely devoted to this topic, The students complained of the 112, 113 and 114 English courses. Their first demand was to cancel the committee which takes the pass or fail decislcn, demanding direct contact with the course teachers of the courses raise the students* papers to the committee with reports. He added that this committee could not fairly evaluate the students, having no previous experience with them. The students also complained to Mr. Nujalm about the In-competance of some teachers. Other than that, they said that papers sometimes are corrected by other teachers than the ones teaching the course. Each teacher has his own system of teaching and grading, some students said, which means that what la considered a good paper for one teacher is not necessarily good for another, Mr. Nujaim added that some students pass all their otlier courses and fall the Ehigllsh, (Cont. on page 8) Talaat badly injured in car crash RUC ranks second in tennis tourney AUC came In the second posiHon in tennis in the Third Intra-University Touma-nent organized by the Egyptian Sports Union in eollaboiation with the Ministry of Youth. Mrs. Shaliinaz Talaat, a Mass Communications Instructor, is recovering in hospital from a grave car accident that occurred last March 13 in In women's double, AUC came in the first place; la tingles the second and sixth positions, players were Hoda Ballgh and Soad Marzouk. In men's both singles and doubles, Mara Mittsouri and Rlchardo Romano got the second position.-In Handball, AUC team beat Helwan University 15/11, -thus reaching the final. AUCtan Ashraf el Banna came in the secood position In Ohara Mittsontf both 100 and 400 meters freestyle swimming. In the Basketball quarter finals Ain Shams grlrls < beat AUC 35/27 » according to Has-san Ahmed, sports director. Hie Tournament which start, ed on March 4 is scheduled to end by April 4. It Includes 60 matches In 16 different games for all national universities, including AUC. Alexandria, when her car, driven by her husband crashed into a taxi cab. She sustained serious head injuries. Her husband and son were also injured, though their condition was less critical. She is presently at Mabarrah Iiospital in Alexandria, Mrs. Talaat is teaching two courses of Mass Comm, tills semester, namely Mass Comm. 200 and 317, which will be taught by Drs. Hal Fisher and Jehane Rashty respectively. CARAVAN staff jointly express their sincere wishes for her speedy and complete recovery. Gar hits co ed An AUC student was hit by a car last Tuesday, while crossing Mohamed Mahmoud Street to go to the new campus. Injuries were slight mainly on the right leg. Nahed^Sharaf, Sophomore in Economics^ said that as she was stepping back, to avoid a young man driving speedily, another car came from the other side and hit her. • ♦I didn’t look l'’:.! .s^de. because the street was turned Into one way.» she said.
