Vol. XXVIII — No. 3 'AUC STUDENT PUBLICATION Friday Oct. 17, 1352 ister of Education Speaks at Convocation Council to Plan New Program for Frosh Initiation The Student Council’s vacant posts were filled during this week. The Council will thus be able to renew its activities and take a final decision, on the club’s new regulations. The Council will soon start planning and drawlng-up a prog^ram for Initiation week and party. It has been decided earlier that there will be no horror room or hell week this year. Initiation rules for newcomers will concentrate mainly on constructive work for the University and the Student body. Richard Lundy, the exchange from Occidental College in the States was invited as a nonvoting guest to attend Council meetings. The Council hopes to benefit from his experience as a foreign student. Elson to Speak On Democracy The Division of Extension will start its public activities this year with a lecture by Dr Edward L.R. Elson on « Resources for Dynamic Democracy >. Dr Elson. lecturing for the Friends of the Middle-East, will deliver his talk tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Oriental Hall. The cinema program of the division will start on Nov. 11. The progrram, which will consist of 12 films, has not yet been decided upon in detail. The public lectures and the forums will start on November 14 and 15. Negotiations have been started by the division for funds needed for the establishment of a social research center. The negotiators hope to establish the center this year. The Division of Extension also hopes the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Ghali Amin from the directorship of the Educational Cinema section will be soon filled. Abdul Halim Kazl. junior science-science-math, Hikmai Saba, junior journalism and Ahmed Abdel iChalek. senior economics, were chosen by the Grant-in-aid committee to receive the Wesleyan University Christian association scholai ships this morning during convocation. Dr. Worth Howard graduate of Wesleyan University, received a -Slim of 500 dollars to be distributed among students worthy of it. Dr. Howard, while he was in the States, also worked on getting more help to the grant-in-aid fund. Two or more scholarships are expected but there is nothing definite yet to announce. The sum, making almost L.E.160, was added .to the grant-in-aid fund and handled by the same committee. Rules were not restricted to any particular class. Students were chosen on basis of a good scholastic record. Try-Outs Tomorrow , The Maskers held their meeting last Monday for the preparation of shows that will be given during the year. They have decided that their show. « The Whole Town’s Talking > will take place during the first week of December. The try-outs for the acting parts in the show wlli be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. on the stage of Ewart Memorial Hall. Ex-Minister to speak J)r. The award is named « The Rose el-Youssef Award v and will be offered for the best news story written by an AUC journalism student. Unlike the Anton el-Gemayl Award which is offered for the best editorial and is available for senior journalism students only the new one can be obtained by any student tak'ng journalism courses in AUC, said M. Abdel Koudous. The amount of the award will ■ be like that of Anton el-Gcmayl, L.E. 10 every year. Ihsan Abdel Koudous In addition to the Anton El-Gemayl Award offered by Mr Ihsan Abdel Koudous, Editor of the Rose el-Youssef weekly, a new award will be given by Mr Ihsan Abdel Koudous is going to renew the Gemayl Award which is supposed to end this year. Its name will also be changed to « Rose el-Youssef Award ». El-Kabbani was introduced ,b^’ Dr. John S. Badeau, president of the university, following the announcements of the winners of the Howard and Kirk cups.— The Convocation was officially opened at 10 a.m. by the Academic procession as inemlK'rs of the staff marched solemly down the aisle and took their seats on the stage. The Invocation speech was given by Mr. Harrel F. Beck, Chairman of the Faculty, School of Oriental Studies. Headings from the Bible were given by George H. Gardner, Division of Extension. This was followed by reailings from the Koran by mr. Abdel .\ziz Abmed, Chairman of the Arabic department. -Academic honors and Scholarship awards were then announced. Following El-Kabbani’s address, the -AUC -Alma Mater was sung. El-KabaDi’s Life El Ka.bliani was born in -Assiut in 1S95 and was graduated from the School of Education in 1919. After grar ■ dilation he worked as a teach-:• in the Assiut Secondary school. AVhen Claba Heed, Swiss, educator, came to Egypt to. experiment with I.Q. tects on, Egyptian students, El-Kabba-. ni worked as his assistant. When Mr. Reed left, El-Kab-. bani completed the investiga. tion. . He travell- ed to the States and gave many lectures on educational problems in Egypt which won him the title of a world expert in education. When he came back, and defore becoming Minister, he participated in laying the foundations of the basic schc- . me of education for illiterates. Mr Hanna Rizk held a reception party for Mr and Mrs Abdel Kader Naamani iMt 'Tuesday. ’The Howards and other staff members \VCTe invited. Dr Gilbert Will Vaccinate Students Dr Gilbert Ibrahim, university physician, declared that so far 240 students have’ had their eye tests _ and physical examinations. All new and old students are to be checked for vaccination certificates. Students who lack these certificates, will be vaccinated against typhoid and smallpox. Dr Gilbert has not jyet assigned a time for his AUO clinical visits. 'The time will temporarily be at 11 a.m. each morning. Ara Mlssakian, senior science math, is Dr Gilbert’s assistant this year. He has replaced Leon Ishkhanian. who graduated last year. Miller Wins First Match Of Staff Tennis Tournament Dr Porter S. Miller, head of the chemistry department won his first Tennis match since 20 years in the first day of the Staff Tennis tournament which began last 'Tuesday. Dr Miller beat Mr Freeman Gosset, social science and physical education instructor with a score of 2-0, 7/5, 6/4. On Wednesday afternoon. Mr John Blumberg, Chairman of the Journalism department, won his match against Mr. Arthur Brown, head of the Philosophy department, with a 2-0, 6/1, 6/4.
