THE SPHINX -December 30th. A correspondent writes from Luxor :— Luxor is beginning to fill up rapidly and every ■day sees fresh arrivals from Cairo either by Cook’s -or the Anglo-American’s dahabeahs, or by tbe trains de luxe. Both the Savoy Hotel and the Luxor Hotel are entertaining quite a large number of guests for the time of year and the Christmas week-end was one of great merriment. On Christmas Eve the Savoy Hotel provided a beautiful Christmas and an exceptionally excellent dinner and the guests made merry until the early hours of the morning. Dr. Kn&ppe and his family from China are staying at the Savoy, and among others who have taken up their quarters'at this popular hostelry are Mr. and Mrs. G. F. Hardy, Mr. Hans Trier, who is well-known as an artist, and the Misses Lysle from Philadelphia. ' Among those who left Cairo for Luxor by the train de luxe of the 27 th inst., we noticed Lord and. Lady Talbot deMalahide; Dr. Hasting, Mr. Denny, Major Johnstone, Mr., Mrs., and Miss Appleton, Mr. J. Sevingsten, Mr. and Mrs. Foaden, Mr. and Mrs. .Weaver, Mr. and Mrs. Blain, Mr. Mumm, Mrs. and Miss Hunt, Miss Dawson and several others.- i • t (r The following is the list of passengers who left for Upper Egypt on board the Anglo-American Company’s dahabeah “Mayflower” yesterday : Mr. M. The Sphinx will give a prize of P.-T. 200 to the solver who shall have answered the greatest number of Acrostics during the month of January —of which there will be four. The first Acrostic will appear in our issue of Saturday January 6th. If two or more correspondents tie for the prize special Acrostics will be given for guessing off the “tie”—orThe ^>rize money may be divided among the Competitors who have “tied”, as the Acrostic Editor may decide. Solutions must be written on one side only of a sheet of paper and signed in the Solvers Pseudonym. They must be posted before the Thursday following ,the publication of the Acrostic and must without fail be accompanied by the Coupon which appears at the end of each Acrostic page.. The decision of the Acrostic Editor in all cases must be accepted as final. Correct solutions together with competitor’s pseudonym will be published each week.
