A visitor who is staying at Helouan sends us the following account of how Christmas was spent in that desert village: - Many may like to hear how we spent Christmas at Helouan in the Lybian desert. With its Nile and Pyramids within sight to remind one we were in the Lands of the Pharoahs, it seems hard to realise that only five days from England, with its recent “Egyptian darkness,” we are basking in the sunshine with the clear rarefied air that seems to fill one’s lungswith new life, and yet here it has been my lot with some 50 or 60 others to spend one of the pleasantest Christmases, I have ever had in an hotel replete with electric light, every comfort and good cooking. We began the day with a bright service in the little church. The afternoon was spent lying in the garden amidst Ponicellum, Borganvillias and Sunflowers, golfing, tennis, al fresco tea parties, with a good string band in attendance. At 7-30 we all assembled in the spacious dining hall of the old Tewfik Palace, and sat down a merry party to do justice to a menu which was carried out to perfection by the efficient manager, Mr. Hergel. After dinner there was dancing and music. New years night was a bright repetition of Christmas Day with games and dancing. After dinner every one retired to rest with the feeling they would never forget Yuletide of 1905 in Tewfik Palace Hotel, Helouan, in the Lybian desert. 4* A Roman Correspondent writes :— On Xmas day the excellent proprietor of the Quirinal Hotel offered his guests an excellent dinner in the splendid French restaurant. The Hotel orchestra, which needs no praise, played a selection of Devotional pieces. A huge Christmas tree was rected in the winter gardon, gloriously decorated M. de Bossien, who has been deputed by the French Government to study the economic conditions of Egypt,, has been for sometime past donsulting Engineer to the Foreign Chamber of Commerce of France and possesses a high reputation for technical knowledge and abundant personal popularity. The Judicial Adviser, Sir Malcolm Me Ilwraith R.C.M.G., has returned from his inspecting tour in Upper Egypt and is now hard at work on his report which is due to appear in about a month’s time. Mr. Savage Landor has left Cairo for Abyssinia. Mr. Landor intends to cross Africa from Jibutil to the Congo mouth by way of Abyssinia, the Upper Nile and the Congo Free State. Let us hope that the intrepid explorer will not fall into the hands of any native potentate with a taste for humorous tortures and repeat his highly unpleasant Tibetan experiences. f Mr. Clarence Forestier-Walker the clever author of ‘ The Chameleon” is staying in Cairo. *$• Mr. Cecil Higgins third Secretary H.B.M’s. Agency i£ back at Cairo. Count Thaddens Bolesta von Kosziebodzki has left Khartoum where he has been staying and will be back in Cairo in few days time. 4* The second small dance at Gheireh Palace Hotel prove in no way less popular than its predecessor, and the restaurant had its full compliment of guests at dinner that evening.Mr. and Mrs. Rom were entertaining a party of fourteen including Lieut. Colonel Watson, Mr. and Mrs. Grew, Mr. Curphy and Miss Begg. Sir Hugh and Lady Smiley had as their guests Captain and Mrs. Maclean, and Mr. and Mrs. Scott Dalgleish, Lady Lampson had a party of six, as also had Lady Strong and the Comte and Comtesse de Sinety. Other guests were being entertained by Mr. and M rs. Thomas, Mr. and Mme de Vties, and Mr. and Mrs. Wharry. The Savoy Hotel is giving a large fancy dress ball on March 6th. The arrangements are not yet completed, but it is just possible that it may resolve itself into a bal masque. 4* We have received the visitor’ list of the Savoy Hotel, Assouan, too late for publication in full but among those who have arrived at the hospitable hostebuy are Graf Dripholz, Graf Kielman-segg, who belongs to an old family celebrated in the annals of Austrian diplomacy Sir Stephen Mackenzie, Miss E.
