Decern b< r 16th THE .SPHINX during 1897 and 1898, when he received the 3rd class star of Zanzibar and medal with clasp. He also served during the Boer war on special service and in 1902 he was created a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Lady Hanhury-Tracy is the widow of Sir Wyndham Robert Carmichael-Anstru ther, who was Hereditary Carver to the Royal Household in Scotland. * It is probable that Mr. Cope Whitehouse, who has been a stranger to Egypt for the last few years will pay us a visit this season. Mr. Cope Whitehouse has expended a considerable sum of money and much time in completing his scheme for flooding the Wadi Rayan in the Fay-oum Oasis, which would certainly result in enormous benefit to the Lower Nile Valley, but as yet the plan has not been carried out. It is true that the initial cost would be great, just as the construction of the Assouan Barrage was an expensive undertaking, but it may be taken for granted that, pro rata, the Wadi Rayan scheme, if adopted and successfully carried out, would be as, if not more, profitable. Some years ago Mr. Cope Whitehouse gave a lecture, which the writer attended, and he then proposed to hand over his entire concessional rights to the Egyptian Government without charge, on the condition that they would carry out his project, but since that time little or nothing has been heard of it. fdk The Right Honourable Edmund Robertson LL.D, K.C., D.L., who has represented Dundee in Parliament in the interests of the Liberal party since 1885, is staying at the Grand Hotel, Helouan. Dr. Robertson was Civil Lord of the Admiralty from 1892 to 1895. He is a keen politician and has written several articles and pamphlets, including a very interesting publication on American Home Rule. Lord Howard de Walden, whose ancestor the first Earl of Suffolk took a leading part in the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot, is expected to pay Egypt a visit early next year in his new yacht Bramwen which has just satisfactorily completed her steam trials, and has left for the Mediterranean. A largely attended reception was held last Friday by Mrs. Sydney Patterson at the Savoy Hotel on the occasion of the christening of her baby. Among those present we noticed Madame Ville-bois, who stood sponsor, Crookshank Pasha and Mrs. Crookslmnk, the Hon. F. Morgan and Mrs. Morgan, Major and Mrs. Spong, and many American residents and visitors. The Hon. F. Morgan, deputy Consul-General for America has taken a suite of rooms at the Savoy Hotel for the season. Last Saturday night he gave a ball to his many friends and as Mr. Morgan is a capital host it was immensely enjoyed by all. At midnight an excellent supper was served in the restaurant, after which dancing was resumed and it was until not quite a late hour that the part}- broke up. Among those present were Captain and Mrs. Me Lean, Colonel and Mrs. J. K. Watson, Mr. Carter Wilson, Captain Hall, Mr. Mitchell Innes, Captain Protheroe Smith, Major Palmer, Thurneyssen Pasha, M. Van der Doss de Villebois, Mine, and Miles, de Villebois, Captain Me Murdo, Captain and Mrs. Blakeney, etc. If Mr. Carter Wilson entertained several friends to dinner at the Savoy Hotel last Saturday night, including Captain the Hon. and Mrs. Cuthbert James, Mr. and Mrs. Satow, and Captain Me Murdo. He served in Afghanistan from 1887 to 1889 and received the medal with clasps and also did good work in Burma (1885-86). * Captain de V. Eauperg, a brilliant officer of the French Army, is on his way to the Sudan with a large party of friends. They intend to spend the greater yart of their time in big game shooting along the Blue Nile. * Sir Ernest Cassel, K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., who plays such a prominent part in the financial world of Egypt, has been created Knight Grand Cross of St. Michael and St. George.
